The Silsoe Odours Ltd team will take a sample of air in the problematic area before transporting it back to our Bedford odour laboratory in special odour-free bags. Within 30 hours of collection, the sample is presented, at a range of dilutions, to a panel of six assessors. The aim is to find the dilution factor of the sample at the 50% detection threshold.

Odours from liquids or solid surfaces can also be analysed using a Lindvall hood. Our specialists are highly trained to determine concentration, hedonic tone and odour intensity, and odour potential measurements.

Alongside our odour analysis and consultancy services, we also offer odour acuity assessments for individuals who wish to know how sensitive they are to odours.

We screen assessors; such has Environmental Health Officers, using the BSEN 13725 method to choose odour panellists. This allows them to compare their odour sensitivity with the population average or with the complainant’s sensitivity.
